Understanding the distinction between them opens the door to a richer appreciation of the wisdom preserved within the Ifá tradition.

For every sincere child of Olódùmarè and devoted follower of Orunmila Bara Ketu, careful reflection upon these sacred concepts is essential.

Ifá: The Divine Message

One traditional understanding describes Ifá as the sacred message of Olódùmarè revealed to humanity through Orunmila Bara Agbonniregun.

In this understanding, Ifá is not simply a system of divination.

It is divine wisdom.

It is sacred knowledge.

It is the eternal guidance through which Olódùmarè continually communicates with creation.

The wisdom of Ifá is preserved within the Odù Ifá, which contain teachings concerning human character, destiny, morality, sacrifice, spiritual development, and harmonious living.

Every Odù reveals principles that assist humanity in understanding both visible and invisible dimensions of existence.

Orunmila: The Divine Messenger

If Ifá is understood as the divine message, then Orunmila Bara Agbonniregun is revered as the great messenger through whom that wisdom is revealed.

He is the witness of destiny.

The custodian of divine knowledge.

The master diviner.

The guide who reveals the path toward balance between humanity and Olódùmarè.

Through Ifá divination, Orunmila illuminates hidden causes, identifies spiritual imbalances, and prescribes the sacrifices and disciplines necessary for restoring harmony.

For this reason, many practitioners distinguish between Ifá, the divine wisdom itself, and Orunmila, the divine being who faithfully preserves and communicates that wisdom.

Together they reveal both the message and the messenger.

Traditional Understandings of the Origin of Ifá

The origin of the word Ifá has been interpreted in different ways throughout Yoruba history.

Various regions preserve different pronunciations, including Ifá, Ẹfá, and Ufá, reflecting linguistic diversity across Yorubaland.

Likewise, traditional scholars have preserved multiple understandings of what Ifá represents.

Some describe Ifá as the sacred wisdom through which the mind of Olódùmarè is revealed.

Others regard Ifá as the eternal spiritual intelligence permeating the universe.

Some traditions emphasize the connection between Ifá and the wisdom of the ancestors.

Historical traditions also recount that Orunmila lived among the people, teaching divine wisdom in places such as Ilé-Ifẹ̀ and later Ìpẹ̀tùmọ́dù, where he continued his sacred mission as priest, teacher, and guide.

These perspectives are not always mutually exclusive.

Rather, they illustrate the richness and depth of a tradition that has continued to evolve through generations of respected elders.

The Meaning of Ifá

According to the traditional interpretation taught by Oluwo Ogunsina Olayinka Babatunde Akano Gudugba Adewuyi, the word Ifá carries a profound spiritual significance.

Within this lineage, Ifá is understood as representing the attraction, drawing, and embracing of divine blessings, sacred wisdom, and supernatural grace.

It signifies humanity’s continual movement toward the infinite blessings that flow from Olódùmarè.

This understanding is beautifully expressed in the traditional prayer:

“Ifá tare wa, tara sàsà tare wa fún.”

Translation:

“Ifá, draw abundant blessings toward me. Quickly attract great fortune and divine favor into my life.”

Likewise, the following invocation expresses confidence in the guidance of Orunmila:

“Orunmila tare wa, tara sàsà tare wa fún mi.”

Translation:

“Orunmila, attract blessings toward me. Quickly connect me with my destiny and my divine fortune.”

Another traditional prayer invokes Èṣù Laalu as the opener of righteous pathways:

“Laalu tare wa, tara sàsà tare wa fún.”

Translation:

“Èṣù Laalu, draw me toward my abundant blessings. Quickly align me with the fortune that Olódùmarè has prepared for me.”

Within this interpretation, the essence of Ifá is not merely knowledge.

It is divine attraction.

The attraction of wisdom.

The attraction of blessings.

The attraction of destiny.

The attraction of harmony between humanity and Olódùmarè.

An Infinite Journey of Learning

Ifá cannot be exhausted by a single lifetime of study.

The more one learns, the more one discovers the vastness of its wisdom.

For this reason, the elders remind us that the path of Ifá is one of continual growth.

We must learn.

We must unlearn.

We must relearn.

With every stage of life, new dimensions of Ifá reveal themselves.

Its wisdom is infinite because it originates from the infinite wisdom of Olódùmarè.

The sincere student therefore approaches Ifá with humility, patience, reverence, and an open heart.

My morning greetings to you, O Ifá.

Orunmila ó jíre.

My morning reverence to you, O Orunmila.

Kí o tara sàsà tare wa fún gbogbo ọmọ Erinwo ní ire lónìí, Ifá.

May you swiftly attract abundant blessings today to all the children of Erinwo, O Ifá.

Kí o tara sàsà tare fún gbogbo ọmọ Orunmila ní ire tí wọ́n lónìí.

May you hasten blessings, favor, and good fortune to all the children and followers of Orunmila today.

May the wisdom of Ifá continually illuminate your path.

May Orunmila Bara Agbonniregun guide your destiny.

May your Ori receive divine insight.

May your life be filled with wisdom, peace, prosperity, long life, and the fulfillment of your sacred purpose.
