Within traditional interpretations, Bàbá Akẹ́yọ̀ signifies the Father and Teacher of Knowledge, while Àgbẹ̀dẹ̀ Gbéyọ̀ emphasizes Orunmila’s extraordinary mastery of language and communication, describing him as one who possesses profound understanding across many forms of expression—a true polyglot.
These names remind us that wisdom is among the greatest gifts bestowed upon humanity by Olódùmarè.
Orunmila: The Eternal Teacher
Throughout the Ifá tradition, Orunmila is revered as one of the greatest teachers ever to guide humanity.
His mission was never limited to divination alone.
He established a living tradition of learning that continues to inspire seekers of wisdom across generations.
Through the Odù Ifá, he taught ethics, spiritual discipline, leadership, medicine, philosophy, personal responsibility, and the pursuit of good character.
His greatest classroom was life itself.
Every challenge became a lesson.
Every experience became an opportunity for growth.
Every question became an invitation to seek deeper understanding.
The Lifelong Pursuit of Knowledge

A respected elder who knows much may still not know everything; therefore even a great Babaláwo may continue learning Ifá from one of his trusted disciples.

According to traditional teachings, this is because the wisdom of Ifá originates from Olódùmarè.

For this reason, every genuine student of Ifá remains both a teacher and a lifelong learner.
Traditional Grades of Ifá Priests
Some traditional lineages distinguish different categories or grades of those who serve within the Ifá priesthood.
Among these are:

- Àti Àwọn Tí A Tẹ Ní Ifá
