Irete Meji (Èjì Ìrètè) is an Odù that speaks of longevity, spiritual maturity, victory, and the sacred journey toward the fulfillment of destiny. It teaches that the greatest blessings in life are attained through wisdom, discipline, sacrifice, and faithful adherence to the guidance of Ifá.

Within this Odù, Orunmila Bara Agbonniregun is praised as Laaku Ogege, a profound title that symbolizes his unique relationship with the Tree of Life, the Tree of Wisdom, and the mystery of spiritual immortality.

According to traditional teachings, Laaku Ogege signifies the Immortal One, the One who climbs the Tree of Life, or the One who has mastered the path to enduring victory and eternal wisdom.

The Path Revealed by Orunmila

According to this Odù, Orunmila alone possessed the complete wisdom required to ascend the Tree of Life.

Traditional teachings explain that this ascent was made possible through proper sacrifice (Ẹbọ), spiritual purification, devotion to Ori, and faithful obedience to the guidance of Ifá.

For this reason, many lineages regard Ìtẹ́fá (Ifá initiation) as a sacred covenant that strengthens one’s relationship with Orunmila and deepens one’s commitment to living according to divine wisdom.

Èsè Ifá lábẹ́ Odù Èjì Ìrètè

Ogege igi Agunla lótù Ilé-Ifẹ̀.

Ogege, the Tree of Victory and Vitality, stands in the sacred city of Ilé-Ifẹ̀.

Ẹni gùn Ogege igi Agunla lógun lótù Ìsàlú Ayé.

Whoever successfully climbs the Tree of Life has ascended the path of wisdom, longevity, prosperity, and victory in the world of humanity.

Àgbà rúgbò ni gùn.

Only the truly wise elder knows the secret of ascending the tree unhindered.

Gbogbo Irúnmọ̀lẹ̀ ló gùn tì.

All the divinities attempted to climb it.

Ajá ìdí Ogege kò jẹ́ kí ẹni ó gùn.

The guardian dog at the foot of the tree prevented others from ascending.

Agbo mòmọ́ ìdí igi Ogege kò jẹ́ kí ẹni ó gùn.

The wild creatures guarding the tree stood against anyone who sought to climb it.

Ẹ̀jò olóró ìdí Ogege kò jẹ́ kí ẹni ó gùn.

The venomous serpents guarding the tree prevented all who approached.

Ogege mọ̀rì sówò, ó mẹ́hìn sákùn.

The branches of the Tree of Life overflow with riches and abundance.

Ó mú agbédé méjì sọ kíkí fàdákà.

Its middle is filled with silver.

Gbogbo ara igi Ogege kún fún wúrà.

Its entire body is filled with gold.

Orunmila nìkan ló mọ ẹbọ àti ẹ̀tùtù tí wọ́n fi ń gùn Ogege.

Only Orunmila knows the proper sacrifice and sacred rites through which the Tree of Life may be ascended.

A dífá fún Orunmila Bara Kétu, ẹni tí wọ́n ń pè ní Laaku Ogege.

Thus Ifá was consulted for Orunmila Bara Kétu, who is known as Laaku Ogege.

Tí ó lọ tẹ̀ wọ́n ní Ifá lótù Ilé-Ifẹ̀.

Who went to initiate blessed souls into Ifá in the sacred city of Ilé-Ifẹ̀.

Ẹni tí Orunmila bá tẹ̀ ní Ifá tí ó sì ṣe ẹ̀tùtù, yóò gùn igi Ogege.

Those initiated into Ifá by Orunmila, and who faithfully observe the prescribed sacrifices and sacred obligations, shall ascend the Tree of Life.

Ẹni tí Orunmila bá tẹ̀ ní Ifá kò ní kú àìkú tí ń ṣe balẹ̀ ọ̀rọ̀.

According to this traditional teaching, those who faithfully walk the path of Ifá receive prayers for long life, peace of mind, good health, and protection from untimely misfortune.

Ọjọ́ tí Ìrèn tẹ̀ méjì lótù Ilé-Ifẹ̀, lá ò kú mọ́.

The day Iren initiated two souls in the sacred city of Ilé-Ifẹ̀ became a symbol of the pursuit of enduring life.

Orunmila ti tẹ̀ wa ní Ifá.

Orunmila has initiated us into Ifá.

Ìrèn náà tẹ̀ méjì lójú Ejìgbòròmẹ́kùn.

Iren likewise initiated two in the world of humanity.

Lí a ń pè ní Ìrètè Méjì.
