Ifá teaches that the condition of our Ori influences the direction of our destiny. A strong Ori strengthens the spirit, guides the body, and enables us to overcome the many challenges encountered throughout life.

For this reason, the care of Ori occupies a central place in the practice of Ifá and Isese.

Ori: Greater Than the Òrìṣà

Among the well-known teachings of Ifá is the saying:

“Àtètè gbéni ju Òrìṣà.”

“Ori is quicker to support and elevate a person than the Òrìṣà.”

This profound statement does not diminish the importance of the Òrìṣà.

Rather, it teaches that every blessing received through the Òrìṣà is ultimately experienced through the alignment and acceptance of one’s Ori, the personal divine consciousness entrusted to each individual by Olódùmarè.

Another traditional saying reminds us:

“Orí l’à bá bọ̀ kí a tó b’Òrìṣà.”

“One must first honor one’s Ori before worshipping the Òrìṣà.”

The teaching is clear.

The journey toward spiritual growth begins within.

The Mind Shapes Destiny

Ifá also preserves the proverb:

“Orí lẹ́ja tí ń bàjẹ́.”

“A fish begins to rot from the head.”

This proverb teaches that decline often begins with the loss of clarity, discipline, and right thinking.

When the mind becomes consumed by fear, anger, resentment, hopelessness, or confusion, these inner conditions can influence every other aspect of life.

For this reason, Ifá encourages us to strengthen the mind before attempting to transform our external circumstances.

Cultivating a Strong Ori

Traditional teachings encourage us to guard against mental states that weaken our inner life.

Persistent worry.

Fear.

Hatred.

Bitterness.

Revenge.

Despair.

Addictive habits.

Constant anger.

These conditions disturb the peace of the Ori and can distract us from fulfilling our destiny.

Instead, Ifá encourages us to nourish the Ori with:

• Prayer (Ìwúre).
• Gratitude.
• Good Character (Ìwà Pẹ̀lẹ́).
• Patience (Sùúrù).
• Discipline.
• Wisdom (Ọgbọ́n).
• Self-control.
• Faith in Olódùmarè.

A disciplined mind becomes fertile ground upon which blessings may flourish.

The Laws of Mind and Spirit

Within Ifá, the physical, mental, and spiritual dimensions of life are understood to operate according to divine principles established by Olódùmarè.

When we learn to govern our thoughts, emotions, words, and actions with wisdom, we create greater harmony between these dimensions.

The disciplined use of the mind strengthens spiritual awareness.

Spiritual awareness guides wise action.

Wise action contributes to the fulfillment of destiny.

In this way, mental discipline becomes one of the greatest forms of personal liberation.

Prayer to Ori

Daily prayer to one’s Ori occupies an important place within traditional Yoruba spirituality.

A simple expression of devotion may be offered while gently placing the hands upon the head:

“Orí mi tí mo níyì o, dandan ni kí o dára lójoojúmọ́.”

“My honored Ori, may you continually bring forth blessings every day.”

May my Ori bless me with breakthrough.

May my Ori guide me toward victory.

May my Ori grant prosperity.

May my Ori bless me with good health.

May my Ori grant me long life.

Sacred Prayer and Spiritual Materials

Traditional Ifá practice also makes use of sacred materials such as Obi, Orogbo, Ataré, cowries, and other ritual items during prayer and prescribed ceremonies.

Within the tradition, these sacred materials are understood not merely as symbolic objects but as instruments used within specific spiritual observances to express devotion, gratitude, sacrifice, and communion with the Divine according to established ritual practice.

Their effectiveness is understood to arise from proper intention, right spiritual preparation, and adherence to the teachings of Ifá.

Invocation to Ori

Orí àpèrò.

May my Ori be filled with noble thoughts and uplifting intentions.

Orí mi àpẹ̀sìn.

My Ori, whom I honor and continually revere.

Àtètè gbéni ju Òrìṣà.

Ori, who supports and elevates more swiftly than the Òrìṣà.

Orí, gbé mi lótù Ìsàlú Ayé; gbà mí ní Ajùlé Ọ̀run.

Ori, support me throughout my journey in the world of humanity, and guide me safely toward the heavenly realm.

The greatest victories begin within.

Before success comes discipline.

Before prosperity comes wisdom.

Before peace comes mastery of the mind.

When the Ori is clear, the path becomes clear.

When the Ori is disciplined, the spirit becomes strong.

When the spirit is strong, the individual walks confidently toward the destiny chosen before Olódùmarè.

May your actions honor your destiny.
