Physical weakness can often be corrected through discipline, learning, and perseverance. However, a mind that is left unstable, undisciplined, or clouded by destructive thinking may gradually drift toward confusion, poor judgment, and self-destruction. Likewise, emotional imbalance can fill a person’s life with fear, resentment, and turmoil, affecting not only the individual but also everyone around them.
Within the wisdom of Ifá, spiritual weakness is regarded as one of the greatest dangers. When neglected over time, it can influence a person’s destiny and, according to the tradition, even affect future generations. For this reason, every action should be approached with wisdom, patience, and careful reflection.
Before you act, weigh your actions.
Before you speak, weigh your words.
Before you react, master your mind.
Ifá teaches that every action carries consequences. Actions performed in secret are no less significant than those performed openly, for both shape character and influence the course of one’s destiny.
A sound mental state is the foundation of a balanced life. It illuminates the body with wisdom, steadies the emotions, and strengthens one’s spiritual awareness. When the mind is disciplined, it becomes a gateway to clarity, self-control, and divine understanding.
Guard yourself against habits that disturb the mind and weaken the spirit:
- Hatred
- Grudges
- Constant anger
- Negative speech
- Fear
- Anxiety
- Chronic worry
- Frustration
- Stress
- Destructive thought patterns
- Hopelessness
These states gradually weaken the individual and draw the mind away from wisdom and peace.
Instead, speak words of blessing over yourself and over the world around you. Never allow another person’s anger, criticism, or gossip to turn your heart against yourself, your family, your ancestors, or creation itself.
Anger deserves particular attention.
If left unchecked, it can cloud judgment, disturb emotional balance, damage relationships, and contribute to physical illness. A disciplined soul learns not to be ruled by anger, even when insulted, misunderstood, or provoked. Wisdom is revealed not by avoiding difficulties, but by responding to them with patience and self-mastery.
Remember that you are more than your thoughts.
You are more than your emotions.
You are a spiritual being whose true nature cannot be diminished by the opinions of others.
Pray often, especially in the quiet hours before dawn. Within the Isese tradition, early morning prayer and the reverent use of sacred materials are understood as ways of aligning oneself with divine guidance and seeking the blessings of the ancestral realm (Gbale).
Honor your ancestors with gratitude and remembrance. Your Ori, your Ẹgbẹ́, and the spiritual forces that accompany your life are understood within Ifá to be deeply connected with your ancestral lineage. Therefore, continue to honor Ifá, Èṣù, Ori, Egúngún, Ẹgbẹ́, and the Irúnmọ̀lẹ̀ according to the customs and guidance of your tradition.
Sometimes what appears to be personal struggle may also be understood, within the Ifá worldview, as an invitation to heal inherited patterns, strengthen one’s Ori, and deepen one’s relationship with the ancestors.
Choose peace over anger.
Choose wisdom over reaction.
Choose discipline over impulse.
In doing so, you strengthen your destiny and become a blessing to those who come after you.
Iwo gangan l’Orisa.
You are the true divinity.
May Olódùmarè bless you, strengthen your Ori, guide your ancestors’ blessings toward you, and fill your life with wisdom, peace, and enduring light.
