Ika Meji: Forgiveness, Gratitude and Spiritual Wisdom

Among the greatest barriers to victory, success, peace, happiness, prosperity, and a meaningful life are spiritual blindness, ignorance of divine truth, and the absence of sincere love for ourselves and others.

When we fail to understand our spiritual nature, we may surrender our strength to anger, resentment, fear, and insignificant conflicts that do not align with our destiny. We become occupied with matters that neither improve our lives nor contribute to the welfare of future generations.

Ika Meji teaches us to overcome evil without becoming evil ourselves. It calls us to forgive, avoid revenge, cultivate gratitude, and direct our spiritual energy toward goodness.

Do Not Give Your Energy to Frivolous Matters

When we refuse to forgive, we continue investing emotional and mental energy in the person or event that hurt us. The incident may have passed, yet we repeatedly recreate it within our thoughts.

Forgiveness does not mean pretending that nothing happened. It does not require us to excuse harmful conduct, abandon healthy boundaries, or remain in an unsafe relationship. Forgiveness means refusing to let another person’s wrongdoing govern our mind, character, and future.

We must learn to distinguish between matters that require wise action and those that merely consume our peace.

Before reacting, ask:

  • Does this matter align with my destiny?
  • Will my response create peace or deepen conflict?
  • Am I acting from wisdom or wounded pride?
  • Will this decision benefit my future?
  • Am I protecting myself responsibly or seeking revenge?
  • Is this situation worthy of my spiritual energy?

Your energy is sacred. Do not scatter it carelessly through anger, gossip, arguments, or endless resentment.

Understand Your Purpose

When we truly recognise our purpose, we become less willing to harm ourselves or others. We understand that every action influences our character, relationships, spiritual condition, and future.

Purposeful living encourages us to overcome:

  • Selfishness
  • Arrogance
  • Ignorance
  • Laziness and idleness
  • Careless or excessive speech
  • Negative and destructive thoughts
  • Immorality and dishonesty
  • Drunkenness and other harmful excesses
  • Smoking and habits that damage the body
  • Gossip and malicious criticism
  • Limiting beliefs
  • Spiritual disorientation
  • Separation from divine oneness

These habits do not merely affect the present moment. When they become established patterns, they may influence families and future generations.

To recognise your purpose is to understand that your life should add value to creation.

Begin the Day With Gratitude and Prayer

Learn to give thanks immediately upon waking. Do not begin the day with fear, complaints, resentment, or thoughts of failure.

Begin with gratitude.

Offer prayer for your life, family, Ori, work, health, spiritual community, and the opportunities before you. Allow prayer to prepare your mind before the demands of the day begin.

Connect your prayer with sincere and constructive emotions. Let gratitude, hope, faith, love, courage, and confidence accompany your words. Prayer should not be an empty repetition. It should awaken responsibility, strengthen character, and guide your actions.

After praying, take meaningful steps. Work, learn, communicate wisely, care for your body, and fulfil your responsibilities.

Prayer becomes vivid when its wisdom is reflected in conduct.

Look for Wisdom in Every Circumstance

Train yourself to recognise something useful in every situation. This does not mean denying pain, injustice, illness, or genuine difficulty. It means refusing to let hardship remove every possibility of wisdom, growth, or responsible action.

A difficult experience may reveal:

  • A habit that must change
  • A boundary that must be established
  • A relationship that requires discernment
  • A weakness that needs strengthening
  • A lesson that must be learned
  • A new direction that should be considered
  • A deeper capacity for patience and prayer

Within this spiritual teaching, everything carries energy. When we continually build hatred, fear, or resentment toward a situation, these emotions may begin to harm our peace, judgement, relationships, and wellbeing.

When we approach life with wisdom, gratitude, and constructive intention, we become more capable of recognising support, solutions, and opportunities in the jungle of life.

The Teaching of Ika Meji: Avoid Revenge

One of the central teachings associated here with Odu Ika Meji is:

Avoid evil, and never take revenge for evil done to you—whether in the past, present, or future.

Revenge keeps us spiritually connected to the offence. It may transform the injured person into a reflection of the one who caused the injury.

Avoiding revenge does not mean abandoning justice. Serious harm may require boundaries, protection, accountability, legal action, or professional assistance. These responses should be guided by wisdom rather than hatred.

The objective is to prevent another person’s wrongdoing from destroying your own character.

You may correct without hatred.
You may protect yourself without revenge.
You may seek justice without surrendering your soul to bitterness.
You may walk away without carrying the conflict into your future.

Use Your Energy Wisely

You are a deified and divinised being endowed with abundant spiritual potential. The energies within you and around you must be used responsibly.

Use your mind to think constructively.

Use your mouth to pray and bless.

Use your hands to perform meaningful work.

Use your body to support life.

Use your wisdom to avoid unnecessary conflict.

Use your character to create peace.

Use your spiritual knowledge to overcome destructive habits.

Do not direct your power toward gossip, hatred, revenge, or self-destruction. Direct it toward healing, knowledge, discipline, service, family progress, and the fulfilment of destiny.

Divine Love Is a Discipline

Divine love is not simply an emotion. It is a disciplined way of living.

It requires:

  • Patience when provoked
  • Forgiveness when wounded
  • Wisdom when making decisions
  • Courage when establishing boundaries
  • Humility when corrected
  • Gratitude during success
  • Hope during difficulty
  • Compassion without surrendering discernment
  • Love for oneself without selfishness
  • Love for others without accepting abuse

True love supports life, good character, and responsible action.
