Iyaami Osoronga Apani Ma Gun Olókìkí Òrun, also known as Iyaami, Aje, or Eleye, represent one of the most profound and powerful feminine energies within the Ifá and Isese spiritual worldview. They are regarded as custodians of immense spiritual authority and forces that influence creation at all levels of existence.
According to Ifá, Iyaami embody a power that gives meaning, movement, and consequence to all things. Their influence extends across spiritual work, including prayer, sacrifice, ritual, initiation, divination, and other sacred activities. It is believed that they possess the ability to strengthen, empower, weaken, or render ineffective spiritual efforts depending on the alignment, wisdom, character, and spiritual condition of the individual performing them.
True connection with Iyaami Osoronga is associated with strength, vision, wisdom, purpose, protection, and the fulfillment of a worthy mission in life.
Ifá speaks of Iyaami as a primordial force present throughout all levels of existence. Their first notable interaction with Orunmila Bara Ketu is traditionally linked to a sacred place known as Irona, where profound mysteries concerning spiritual power and destiny were revealed.
Throughout different traditions, opinions vary regarding their classification. Some regard Iyaami as Orisa, others as Irúnmolè, while some consider them Ebora. Regardless of classification, many agree that Iyaami Osoronga represent one of the greatest manifestations of feminine spiritual power within the cosmos.
The entire universe is said to have been entrusted to them as a territory of influence and administration. They possess both the power to nurture and build, and the capacity to destroy when their power is ignored, abused, or dishonored.
When operating through light, wisdom, protection, and blessing, they are often referred to as Iyaami Osoronga, Eleye Funfun, or Aje Funfun. When expressing destructive, corrective, or punitive forces, they may be referred to as Aje Dúdú or Eleye Ika. Yet even these distinctions do not diminish the reality that their power remains part of the sacred balance of creation.
For this reason, many Ifá priests, initiates, and observers of tradition recognize the importance of honoring and acknowledging Iyaami. Their energies are considered too vast to be fully described by ordinary language. They are viewed as powers that coexist alongside the primordial forces established at the beginning of creation.
Their presence is reflected in numerous Ifá verses, including teachings found within Odu Ifá Osa Ogbe:
Bi gunyan gunyan bá gunyan, tí kò bá fi ti awon Iyaami ṣe, ìyàn a má ni koko, ìyàn wọn a má ro betebete.
“If those who pound yam fail to give due recognition and obeisance to Iyaami, their pounded yam will contain lumps and will not be properly prepared.”
Bi roka rona bá nroka, tí kò fi ti awon Iyaami nṣe, oka wa a má ro betebete.
“If those who prepare yam flour fail to acknowledge and appreciate Iyaami, their meal will not be properly prepared and will be unsuitable for consumption.”
These verses symbolically teach that success, completion, harmony, and effectiveness often depend upon recognizing and respecting the spiritual forces that operate behind visible reality.
