Within Yoruba sacred cosmology, Obatala is entrusted with tremendous creative responsibility.

According to this traditional account, Obatala was given the authority to fashion the physical form of human beings.

However, an important distinction is made concerning the head — Orí.

In the teaching presented here, the formation or selection connected with the head belongs to the sacred mystery associated with Ajala, another important figure within Yoruba cosmological narratives.

What value is there in calling upon the divinity of patience while refusing to develop patience?

What value is there in reverencing sacred whiteness while filling one’s actions with deception?

The devotee must attempt to embody the principle being revered.

Therefore, honoring Obatala also means striving toward ìwà rere — good character.

It means becoming more patient today than yesterday.

More truthful.

More disciplined.

More peaceful.

More dependable.

More conscious of one’s actions.

More capable of creating rather than destroying.

That is a living form of reverence.

A Lesson from Obatala

Obatala teaches us that the greatest creative power does not necessarily emerge from noise, aggression, or haste.

Sometimes the greatest power is calmness.

Sometimes the greatest strength is patience.

Sometimes the greatest spiritual achievement is self-control.

Sometimes the greatest sacrifice is refusing to betray your character even when dishonesty appears easier.

And sometimes the greatest manifestation of spirituality is simply becoming a person whose word can be trusted.

Protect your character.

Develop your patience.

Purify your intentions.

Strengthen your mind.

Remain faithful to worthy principles.

Use your knowledge to create rather than destroy.

And allow the creative wisdom placed within you by Olodumare to manifest through disciplined action.
