The origin and identity of Orunmila Bara Agbonniregun have long been subjects of discussion among traditional scholars, priests, and students of Ifá. Different lineages preserve different accounts concerning his nature, his earthly mission, and his relationship to the other divine beings established by Olódùmarè.

Understanding these traditions helps us appreciate the richness of the Ifá and Isese heritage while recognizing that not every lineage preserves the same historical or theological interpretations.

Was Orunmila a Human Being?

Some traditions describe Orunmila as having lived among humanity as a man of flesh and blood.

Within these accounts, he is said to have been born in the sacred city of Ilé-Ifẹ̀, with Jakuta (or Agbonniregun) and Alajeru identified as his father and mother respectively.

Other respected traditions, however, reject this interpretation.

According to these lineages, Orunmila was never merely an extraordinary human being. Rather, he is understood to be an Irúnmọ̀lẹ̀—a primordial divine being created directly by Olódùmarè and commissioned to descend from Ajùlé Ọ̀run (the Heavenly Realm) to Ìsàlú Ayé (the world of matter) in order to guide humanity.

Within this understanding, Orunmila’s association with Jakuta, the primordial power of thunder, reflects companionship in the divine mission rather than a biological relationship.

The Meaning of Agbonniregun

Some traditions have suggested that Agbonniregun was a separate individual, a close companion, or even the brother of Orunmila.

Within the lineage preserved by Oluwo Ogunsina Olayinka Babatunde Akano Gudugba Adewuyi, however, Agbonniregun is understood not as another person but as an integral part of Orunmila’s full sacred name:

Orunmila Bara Agbonniregun.

According to this interpretation, the name Agbonniregun carries profound spiritual symbolism and reflects the abundant blessings, divine order, and disciplined wisdom associated with Orunmila.

Its deeper meaning deserves careful study in its own right, and it will be explored more fully in future discussions.

Orunmila: Òrìṣà or Irúnmọ̀lẹ̀?

The distinction between Òrìṣà and Irúnmọ̀lẹ̀ has been interpreted in different ways across Yoruba traditions.

Some lineages use these terms differently, while others maintain clear distinctions.

One traditional interpretation explains that the title Òrìṣà refers to exalted beings whose extraordinary spiritual qualities distinguish them among humanity. In this understanding, many revered kings, women, men, and cultural heroes have come to be honored as Òrìṣà because of their exceptional lives and contributions.

Within the same lineage, however, Orunmila is understood primarily as an Irúnmọ̀lẹ̀—a divine being who did not originate through ordinary earthly parentage but was created directly by Olódùmarè and entrusted with a sacred mission before descending to the earth.

According to these teachings, Orunmila belongs among the great primordial divinities who came from Ajùlé Ọ̀run to establish divine order within creation.

The Early Divine Beings

Traditional accounts within this lineage identify several primordial Irúnmọ̀lẹ̀ as among the earliest divine beings sent from heaven to dwell among humanity.

These include:

• Obàtálá Òṣèrèmàgbò.
• Orunmila Bara Agbonniregun.
• Ògún Oníire.
• Jakuta, understood here as the primordial divine power of thunder and distinguished from the historical Ṣàngó Ọba Kòso, who is revered as a deified king within many Yoruba traditions.
• Èṣù Laalu (Olailu).
• Odùduwà Àtẹ́wọ̀rọ̀, who is traditionally described as descending from heaven by the sacred cord established by Olódùmarè.

Within these teachings, these divinities were entrusted with establishing harmony, wisdom, justice, civilization, and the fulfillment of destiny upon the earth.

Orunmila: Prophet and Redeemer

Among all the divine beings, Orunmila occupies a unique place.

He is revered as the earthly prophet of Ifá, the faithful messenger of Olódùmarè, and the custodian of the wisdom preserved within the Odù Ifá.

His mission is to reveal solutions where confusion exists.

To illuminate the path where darkness prevails.

To restore harmony where disorder has taken root.

Through divination, sacrifice, counsel, and sacred wisdom, Orunmila guides humanity toward the fulfillment of destiny.

For this reason, many devotees honor him as the great redeemer of human destiny, whose teachings continue to offer hope, clarity, and direction to all who sincerely seek wisdom.

The Meaning of the Name Orunmila

The meaning of the name Orunmila has also been interpreted in different ways throughout history.

One traditional Yoruba explanation derives the name from the expression:

“Òrun ló mọ àtìlà.”

This is traditionally understood to mean:

“Only Heaven knows the true way of salvation,” or “Only Heaven possesses the complete knowledge that saves.”

Other scholars have explored possible historical and linguistic connections between Yoruba traditions and the religious heritage of ancient Kemet (Egypt), proposing similarities between names and sacred concepts. These comparative interpretations remain subjects of ongoing scholarly discussion and should be understood as interpretive theories rather than established historical conclusions.

Whatever one’s preferred interpretation, the name Orunmila consistently evokes wisdom, divine guidance, and the eternal relationship between heaven and earth.

Throughout Yorubaland, Orunmila is honored through numerous praise names that celebrate his wisdom, power, compassion, and sacred mission.
