Ose Otura and Èṣù Elégbára: The Path of Divine Support and Victory

Aboru Aboye.

Within the Ifá and Isese tradition, no discussion of Èṣù is complete without understanding his profound relationship with the sacred Odù Ose Otura (Òsé Òtúrá).

This Odù, composed of Òsé on the right and Òtúrá on the left, is traditionally associated with divine victory, peace, harmony, protection, and the blessings that flow from Olódùmarè through Èṣù Odara.

According to the teachings preserved under Òsé Òtúrá, no meaningful endeavor succeeds without divine support, and Èṣù plays an indispensable role in that process.

For this reason, the elders teach:

Do not begin an important undertaking without acknowledging Èṣù.

Do not conclude an important undertaking without giving thanks through Èṣù.

He stands at the beginning of every journey and at the completion of every endeavor, ensuring that the pathways of communication between humanity and the divine remain open.

In this way, Èṣù becomes both the opener of roads and the guardian who watches over their successful completion.

The Symbols of Èṣù

The sacred symbols associated with Èṣù communicate profound spiritual teachings.

Among the most recognizable are his two faces, traditionally depicted with four eyes—two looking forward and two looking behind.

These symbolize his complete awareness.

He sees what lies ahead while remaining mindful of what has already passed.

Within traditional interpretation, they also represent his ability to perceive both the visible world and the unseen spiritual realm, watching over the movements of creation with unwavering vigilance.

Another important symbol is the Ògó Èṣù, the sacred staff associated with his authority.

It represents:

  • Spiritual protection.
  • The removal of obstacles.
  • The neutralization of destructive forces.
  • The defense of those who walk in alignment with divine order.
  • The authority to preserve justice and maintain balance.

Through this symbol, Èṣù is understood as the defender of both himself and those who sincerely follow the righteous path.

Èṣù and the Sacred City of Ketu

Traditional teachings associated with Òsé Òtúrá also connect Èṣù intimately with the ancient city of Ketu.

The marks upon Èṣù’s face are understood within this tradition to symbolize the identity of Ketu and to remind devotees of his foundational role in the city’s sacred history.

According to these accounts, Èṣù established the spiritual foundation of Ketu before installing Orunmila Bara Ketu as its first ruler.

Thus, the prosperity of Ketu is understood to rest upon the harmonious cooperation of Èṣù and Orunmila, each fulfilling distinct yet complementary responsibilities within the divine order established by Olódùmarè.

The Blessings of Òsé Òtúrá

Within certain lineages, the appearance of Òsé Òtúrá during divination, initiation, or after sacrifice is regarded as a powerful sign of divine support.

It is associated with the active presence and blessings of Èṣù Laròyé, Èṣù Onílẹ̀ Òrítà, Èṣù Odara, Èṣù Elégbára, and Èṣù Laalu, whose roles include opening pathways, removing obstacles, and assisting devotees in realigning their lives with destiny.

Traditional teachings further explain that Òsé Òtúrá supports deliverance from the destructive influences known as Ajogun Ọ̀run and protection against the harmful earthly forces referred to as Ẹ̀bùrù Ayé.

Understanding these forces forms an important part of spiritual education within many Ifá lineages. Through knowledge, discipline, prayer, sacrifice, and good character, practitioners seek to overcome adversity, transform challenges into opportunities for growth, and establish a legacy of blessing for future generations.

Walking the Path with Èṣù

The teachings of Òsé Òtúrá remind us that no one walks alone.

Every sincere prayer…

Every righteous sacrifice…

Every act of good character…

Every step taken with wisdom…

Invites divine assistance.

May Òsé Òtúrá open every closed door before you.

May Èṣù Elégbára remove every obstacle from your path.

May he deliver you from misfortune, protect you from destructive forces, and guide your destiny toward peace, harmony, abundance, and lasting fulfillment.

May the blessings of Olódùmarè remain with you and your descendants forever.

Héèpà Èṣù Laalu!

Héèpà Ìmọ̀lẹ̀!

Héèpà Òrìṣà!

Héèpà Irúnmọ̀lẹ̀!

Àṣẹ
