Ifá Is Ìwà: Character Is the Foundation of Destiny

Idleness, laziness, and procrastination weaken the human spirit. They prevent growth, delay purpose, and keep a person from developing the gifts placed within them. Within the wisdom of Ifá, a life without discipline gradually drifts toward ignorance and away from the fulfillment of destiny.

An enlightened soul is different.

Such a person strives to remain positive, seeks wisdom even in adversity, works diligently, and continually adds value—not only to personal life, but also to family, parents, community, country, and the wider universe.

Work on yourself every day.

Develop good character.

Practice patience.

Live with purpose.

One of the most profound teachings of Ifá is expressed in a simple statement:

Ifá ni Ìwà. Ìwà ni Ifá.

Ifá is Character. Character is Ifá.

Ifá is more than divination. It is the wisdom, knowledge, and understanding of the divine order established by Olódùmarè. It reveals the relationship between Ori, the Òrìṣà, the Irúnmọ̀lẹ̀, Ẹgbẹ́, Ẹ̀bọra, Ayé, and Ọ̀run, guiding humanity toward harmony with creation.

Ifá is also understood as the divine message that flows from the higher realms into the world through the sacred wisdom entrusted to Orunmila Bara Agbonniregun, making divine knowledge available to humanity.

Ìwà, on the other hand, is the character, conduct, habits, and moral essence of the individual.

Without good character, spiritual knowledge loses much of its value.

The elders therefore teach the importance of cultivating:

  • Ìwà Pẹ̀lẹ́ — gentle and noble character.
  • Ìwà Tútù — calmness, inner peace, and emotional balance.
  • Ìwà Òtítọ́ — honesty, integrity, and truthfulness.
  • Sùúrù — patience and endurance.
  • Ọgbọ́n — wisdom and sound judgment.
  • Ìmọ̀ — understanding and continual learning.
  • Òye — deep knowledge and insight.

These virtues attract the blessings of Olódùmarè and His numerous divinities while strengthening one’s destiny and becoming a blessing to future generations.

For every student and initiate of Ifá, these principles should become daily practice rather than occasional ideals.

Let your character speak before your words.

Let patience guide your decisions.

Let wisdom shape your actions.

Let understanding deepen your relationships.

By embracing Ìwà, Sùúrù, Ọgbọ́n, and Ìmọ̀, we not only transform our own lives but also strengthen our families, uplift our communities, and leave a worthy legacy for those who follow.

May our thoughts be wise.

May our actions be honorable.

May our character reflect the light of Olódùmarè.

Ifá a gbọ́ àdúrà wa ooo.

May Ifá hear our prayers, grant our righteous desires, and bless us abundantly.
