Remember that Ifá, Odù, Òrìṣà, Irúnmọlẹ̀ and Orí cannot be given complete meaning or a vivid explanation without Olori PataPata—Olódùmarè.
Olódùmarè is the Source of everything ever created, both living and non-living. Olódùmarè is the greatest vibration, the greatest energy and the Supreme Power within and beyond creation.
Olódùmarè is beyond human comprehension. The limited knowledge humanity possesses about Him, Her or Them is confined to what has been revealed through Ifá, the Irúnmọlẹ̀ and the tradition.
Human language uses pronouns such as He, She or They, but no human expression can fully define the Supreme Source. Olódùmarè transcends the categories through which the human mind attempts to understand existence.
The Supreme Source of All Creation
Olódùmarè is the origin of all that exists.
Every visible and invisible being, every form of life, every spiritual essence and every energy within creation originates from this Supreme Source.
Olódùmarè may be called:
- Olori PataPata
- Orìsé
- Orisé
- Agba Orisa
- Arugbo Ojó
However, Olódùmarè must never be reduced to the level of an Òrìṣà or Irúnmọlẹ̀. The divinities and deities are creations of Olódùmarè, and every Orí comes from the Supreme Source.
This is why Olódùmarè is called Orísè—the Source and Creator of all beings and essences.
Do Not Confuse Orìsé or Orísè with Òrìṣà
The words Orìsé, Orísè and Òrìṣà must not be confused with one another.
The name Orìsé is different from the word Orísè. The word Orìsè, from the author’s native language of Idanre, refers to the infinite power or cosmic energy embedded within creation.
These terms must be understood according to their distinct meanings and should not be confused with Òrìṣà, which refers to the divinities and deities created by Olódùmarè.
Olódùmarè can be referred to as Agba Orisa or Arugbo Ojó, but this does not place the Supreme Source within the same category as the Òrìṣà or Irúnmọlẹ̀. Olódùmarè remains beyond all created divinities because all spiritual beings, powers and forms of Orí originate from the Supreme Source.
Beyond Beginning and the End of Time
Olódùmarè has no beginning of days and no end of time.
Olódùmarè is self-created, self-existing and self-sufficient in all things. No human being can identify a beginning, an origin, a father or a mother of the Supreme Source.
For this reason, Olódùmarè is described as an incredible and supernatural formation of energy, energies, force, forces, power and powers that cannot be fully conceptualised, reduced or explained through human wisdom.
The human mind seeks beginnings and endings because physical existence is measured through time. We are born, we grow and we depart. We observe beginnings, transformations and endings throughout nature.
Olódùmarè, however, cannot be confined within this pattern. The Supreme Source precedes every beginning and remains beyond every ending.
The Limits of Human Knowledge
Whatever we say about Olódùmarè arises from the limited knowledge available to humanity.
We attempt to explain the Supreme Source through what we have:
- Heard
- Learned
- Seen
- Felt
- Perceived within the unseen world
- Received through a state of trance
- Inherited through Ifá and tradition
Yet each explanation remains limited because the infinite cannot be completely contained within the finite human mind.
We should therefore approach the mystery of Olódùmarè with humility. We may recognise the energy, power and wisdom of the Supreme Source throughout creation, but we cannot claim complete knowledge of what exists beyond human comprehension.
Olódùmarè as Unified Spiritual Wisdom
Olódùmarè, the Source of all seen and unseen creation, may be understood as a unified spiritual wisdom radiating throughout the entire cosmos.
This spiritual wisdom is not limited to one place. Its power is present within and beyond nature, within visible existence and throughout the unseen dimensions of creation.
Olódùmarè is the source of the energies that form, sustain and transform the universe. The natural world, the spiritual world and all the forces that operate within them exist through this Supreme Power.
Since humanity does not know the beginning or end of Olódùmarè, we can say only a little about the infinite energy, power and force called Olódùmarè.
Ẹsẹ Ifá Under Òyèkú Ogbè
According to the Odù Òyèkú Ogbè, also known as Oyeku Logbe:
E o ma iya
Keyin o ma tun sure puro mo
E o ma baba
Keyin o ma tun sure seke mo
E o mo Iya,
E o mo baba Olodumare
A difa fun Tela-Iroko
To so wi pe oun nree ki Olodumare
Oba a teni tan
Fori gbeji
Translation
You do not know the mother of Olódùmarè;
therefore, stop your impulsive lying.
You do not know the father of Olódùmarè;
therefore, stop your torrent of falsehood.
You know neither the mother
nor the father of Olódùmarè.
Thus was the Ifá oracle divined for Tela-Iroko,
who proposed to name the origin of Olódùmarè.
The King who, having spread the divine mat,
uses His head as the fountain and foundation of rain.
The Teaching of Òyèkú Ogbè
This verse teaches us that the origin of Olódùmarè is beyond human knowledge.
No person knows the mother or father of Olódùmarè. No individual can truthfully identify where the Supreme Source began or declare the circumstances through which Olódùmarè came into existence.
The verse therefore warns against impulsive claims and false declarations concerning what cannot be known.
Human beings should not invent answers merely to satisfy the desire to explain everything. When knowledge has reached its limit, wisdom requires honesty and humility.
The mystery of Olódùmarè cannot be resolved through speculation, argument or confident falsehood. The Supreme Source has no beginning that humanity can identify and no end that the human mind can measure.
The Infinite Energy Within Creation
Olódùmarè is pure vibration, energy and infinite power capable of accomplishing all things.
The spirit is the spark of existence within creation. This divine energy forms nature and creates all the natural things within you, around you, far from you and throughout the universe.
Everything visible and invisible exists within the vast formation of divine power. Human beings, animals, trees, land, water, spiritual beings and the forces of nature all emerge within the creation of Olódùmarè.
The energy of the Supreme Source pervades the cosmos without being limited by the cosmos. It sustains what is living and gives form and purpose to all that exists.
Ifá, Odù, Òrìṣà, Irúnmọlẹ̀ and Orí receive their meaning within this greater reality. None can be separated from the Supreme Source from whom all power, essence and existence originate.
Approach the Supreme Mystery with Humility
The appropriate response to the mystery of Olódùmarè is not careless speculation but humility, reverence and wisdom.
We may recognise the Supreme Power through the order of creation. We may receive knowledge through Ifá, the Irúnmọlẹ̀, tradition and spiritual experience. Yet we must also remember the limits of human understanding.
Olódùmarè cannot be confined to one human description, one form, one gender or one intellectual concept. The Supreme Source is greater than every name used to describe Him, Her or Them.
Olódùmarè has no beginning of days and no end of time.
Olódùmarè is the Source of Orí, the Creator of the divinities and the infinite spiritual wisdom radiating throughout the cosmos.
