Spiritual Materials in Ifá: Nourishment for the Spirit and Alignment with Divine Forces

Some people may ask: Why use spiritual materials at all?
The answer is simple. It is the same as asking why we eat food or drink water when we could attempt to live without nourishment.

Just as food sustains the body, spiritual materials nourish the spirit and the divinities. They create a medium through which prayer, intention, and divine alignment become active forces rather than passive wishes.

For this reason, one should never ignore simple rituals or neglect small acts of sacrifice. Within the Ifá tradition, Ètùtù (ritual appeasement) and Ebo (sacred offering) are essential aspects of life. They allow us to connect with the higher self, align with Olodumare, and harmonize with the numerous Irúnmọlẹ̀ (divinities) that govern the balance of existence.

Life as Gift, Fruit, and Seed

Life itself is often described as a gift, a fruit, and a seed. At first glance, the meaning may appear symbolic, but through the deeper wisdom of Isese, its significance becomes clearer.

  • A gift must be appreciated and protected.
  • A fruit carries nourishment and fulfillment.
  • A seed contains the potential for future generations.

When we support life with the fruit of orógbó (bitter kola), the seeds of obi (kola nut), and the gift of ataré (alligator pepper), we participate in sustaining the sacred cycle of existence. These materials help life express its true essence and empower it to serve both humanity and divinity within creation.

Courage to Practice Wisdom

Be courageous enough to use sacred materials such as orógbó, obi, ataré, owó ẹyọ̀ (cowries), and the practice of marking Odu. These elements help invoke light, truth, wisdom, understanding, protection, blessings, prosperity, and victory for your life and for your lineage.

Wisdom and knowledge often require effort, discipline, and humility—but ignorance is far more costly. The consequences of foolishness and neglect are far heavier than the price of learning and practicing spiritual wisdom.

May the spiritual blessings contained in orógbó manifest in your life and remain the inheritance of your generations forever.

Àṣẹ.
